Professor Lillian Robinson

WSDB 498B

WSDB 498B - Women and Globalization
Sweatshop operatives in Bangladesh and Mexico, Filipinas indentured as domestic workers in Canada, Sri Lankan domestics in Saudi Arabia, data entry clerks in Barbados, sex workers in Thailand, fast food servers in the United States-these are some of the women whose lives and work are shaped by our increasingly global economy.   Trans-national corporations, international “free trade” agreements, and supra-national agencies like the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund increasingly dominate the big world picture.  This course takes a look at the way that “big picture” is refracted in the experience of working women-in their own countries and as immigrants.  Although we will be considering the structural basis of globalization, emphasis will be on the micro-economic level of women’s work in the global and global-izing context.

Tuesday evenings, 18:99-20:15, in Room 101 of the MU Annex, the Simone de Beauvoir Inst. building at 2170 Bishop.
